Hallarflot Arch 1
NABSQNO 28W 411984 – 7275607
Less than a mile off the eastern shore of Lake Myvatn in north central Iceland lies Dimmuborgir. There a pool of lava about 1 ¼ miles in diameter formed during a volcanic eruption. High pillars of lava then formed when steam rose through the molten rock and cooled. This has left a dark satanic landscape which gives the area its name “dark cities” or “gloomy castles”.
A short side trail off the Big Circle Trail leads to two arches and is signposted as Hallarflot.
The arch has a span of about 9 ft and a height of about 5 ft.
